I like the new look
Thanks. The original Sodwork has been around since 2001 and was built using some very nasty looking spaghetti code and a complete disregard for web standards, aesthetic taste and common decency. This new one is compliant with W3C standards for XHTML 1.0 Transitional and has a nice modular design code-wise. The result? It's far better looking (well, I think so anyway), works better and does more with about 2,500 fewer lines of code than the old one.
I'm desperate to know what software was used to create and host this site
I bet you are, you young scamp! Naturally, it is hosted on a Linux server (actually a VDS) at Mythic Beasts running Debian Linux. Web pages are dished out by Apache, but not before they have been pre-processed by PHP, which is itself cached with Turck MMCache. At the back end, we have MySQL blatting out the data from it's database, which is made a lot easier to use by having PHPMyAdmin tickle its command line on my behalf.
Incidentally, isn't open source software bloody marvellous? Look at all those links. All that software is available for free.
But anyway. On the creation side, the writing and testing of this site was done on my Linux desktop at home, running Mandriva Linux. Software used was Quanta Plus for the page editing, The Gimp for editing images and Open Office for vector drawings and a few other bits and bobs. For those occasions when I can't use a nice Linux desktop and have to use some manky old Microsoft one (yuck), I fondle my code with jEdit because it's got decent syntax highlighting and an S/FTP plugin to edit files online.
All the software used to create and host the site is open source. It is untouched by the sticky claws of Microsoft. So there.
Why does the text scale so badly?
Changing the font size does have nasty effects on this site. Sorry about that. It's the first thing I'm going to look into after it goes live.
Why do the hotlinks to your pictures from my blog go bad after a while?
Because I don't spend money keeping this server going to act as a picture repository for a bunch of degenerate freeloaders. The location of the piccies randomly changes every week. If you think there is a compelling reason why you should be able to hotlink to them then tell me it and I can sort you out.
What's up with your message thing?
Do you mean why doesn't your spam show up when you try to add it to the interactive bits of the site?
Yes, and when I swear
URLs to sites or any things that look like they might be an URL to a site are not allowed anywhere. It's to stop spammers filling the pages up with dross. Swearing is allowed in some places but not in others. I'm not going to tell you where. Most times you won't get an error message - again, to confuse spammers. Sorry if it inconveniences you. If you've got the URL to a really shit hot site that everyone must see, send it to me and I'll see if it really is good enough to add to the links page
If I go to a form that's mailed and start it with "Bcc: email@example.com" will it be Bcc'd?
No. It just annoys me when I get it in my inbox with your pathetic "Bcc: ..." attempt at a relay hack in the body text. Now go and jump off a cliff.
